my tokyo guide

Before I get into the details where I shopped, took photos, stayed and filled my belly, let me do a little de-brief. I’m here, sitting at my window seat writing to you guys on my flight back to Melbourne. So I went to Japan for two weeks, usually when I travel for work I like to stretch out my dates as much as I can to do some exploration and personal photography stuff. I feel like it’s really hard to truly get to know a place if you’re only their for 4-5 days. Tokyo was the same, even though I’ve been there countless times, there’s still so much to see and experience. All that said, here’s my little Tokyo guide filled with my highlights, let’s get started.

where I wandered

daikanyama

For those of you who have been following my travel diaries from my old blog know that Daikanyama is my favourite suburb in Tokyo. So naturally, it’s where I will start with my guide. I am in love with this area, and I love it more and more every time I get to come back. If you’re a fan of vintage shops, little home decor stores or just a nice walk in a calm atmosphere, this is the place to be. Don’t miss out Tsutaya t-site, they have a huge collection for visuals, also the a cute little camera shop just outside the bookshop. I discovered Hachiya Tea Stand this time around, which I reckon has the most delicious tea lattes in my opinion. They literally got me hooked, I’ve been ordering it non-stop in every cafe, but nothing is as special as this one.

Just one stop away form Daikanyama. Another great option for leisurely strolls with a few small, niche stores to pop in here and there. The highlight of this area is definitely the Traveller’s Company ⏤ a two-level stationery store storing all sorts of travel diaries and little stuff to make your life easier on the go. They also have a nice selection of film cameras (saw a vintage half-frame Ricoh, which I sooo regret not buying because I’ve been thinking about it non-stop ever since I come back). PS. if you’re going in cherry blossom season you have to go there.

If you’re looking to make a designer splurge, this is the place to be, even for vintage consignments. Though I personally prefer the little alleys along the main street for some streetwear finds. Even if you’re not into shopping, this area is still great for some architecture hunts, all the luxury flagship shops are all beautifully built and designed.

shinjuku by tiffany yang
shinjuku

We stayed in Shinjuku this time, merely for the number of supper choices in the area. All that said, Shinjuku is probably one the best place (the other being Shibuya) to really experience the vibrancy of  Tokyo’s city culture. Streets and storefronts are covered with colourful signs. I mean the colours are so loud but the people here are all so quiet, such an interesting balance.

nihonbashi by tiffany yang

nihonbashi

If I’m honest, I was only here for a good hour. Perhaps it was the building structures or the right timing for natural lights and shadows, I was so amazed by how photogenic Nihonbashi is. Being the financial district, the area itself is quite different from the others I’ve mentioned. There’s also a nice combination of historical elements and new business building which I don’t really see in other places.

Mercer Brunch – 4 Chome-2-35 Roppongi, Minato
It’s named after brunch, but I think the dinner menu is better. Try the Mushroom & truffle gnocchi.

Caffice –  2F, 4 Chome-2, Shinjuku
My reading spot. Loads of drink choices and finger foods.
